Downeast is the northeast stretch of the Maine coast, from Ellsworth to Lubec. Set along the Bay of Fundy, it has 20’ tide changes every six hours which modify vistas from very full bays to stretches of flat beaches for clamming at low tide. Once the sardine canning capital of the world, Lubec, the easternmost township in the US, now offers hikers and sailors a range of outdoor opportunities. This area has been my summer refuge for decades.
